Footloose and Fancy (Dairy) – Free

I think the Saldanhas are going to go dairy-free.

That’s right.

Cheese – out.

Milk on my Corn Chex – nope.

Yogurt in my smoothie – done.
But our little experiment will all be worth it once Little Miss doesn’t cry and cry and cry when she’s awake. Plus, she’s got a little bit of a rash on her arms and legs. Milk-induced excema? Perhaps.

Dairy may be one of my favorite things, next to perfume and springtime, so giving it up will be hard. Just because I have it in EVERYTHING. But totally worth it though. I will do anything for Miss Lady.

So Chris went to the store today and bought us some soy yogurt (verdict = ehhh…), vegan butter (verdict =  can’t tell a difference. awesome), and vanilla almond milk (verdict = oh. my. yum. Like seriously, a glass of this will start to be our sweet bite after dinner! Creamy, sweet, delicious. Downside is that it’s just a wrong shade of grey. Gonna have to get used to that. I grabbed a couple of oreos and a glass of almond milk and the milk was almost TOO sweet to accompany oreos! What a BEVERAGE!!!)

Check back with us in a week or so. We may be feeling so good, we may never go back to regular dairy. Even if dairy ISN’T what’s hurting Babe’s tum.

Oh, and yes. Christopher is going dairy-free as well. He doesn’t need to, but he’s doing it as an act of solidarity. What a wonderful man. Sigh.

If anyone out there reads this and has gone dairy free and has some suggestions of awesome things we could try to make this transition easier, please let us know!

Aaaand…here’s Little Miss. Doesn’t she just make the world a brighter place?

Been dairy-free for about a year now … and I can pretty much promise that you guys are gonna feel so good in the next couple weeks! Definitely try coconut milk ice cream (Purely Decadent is the brand I buy) … it’s expensive (around $5 a pint in Michigan), but totally worth it if you’re an ice cream lover. Also, Amy’s brand mac-and-soy-cheese is great if you need a quick microwave lunch or something. And “The Kind Diet” (by Alicia Silverstone … no seriously) has some pretty stellar recipes for things like cupcakes with chocolate frosting (totally dairy free and vegan).

If you get the “original” flavor almond milk rather than the vanilla flavor, it’s not nearly as sweet – still a little sweeter than cow’s milk but you may be able to eat with Oreo’s!

Our allergist said that less than 50% of ezcema cases are food-related. So maybe you won’t have to do this forever? Also smart balance buttery spread is non dairy and tastes a lot like butter. Good luck!

If it’s critical to be 100% dairy free, find a list online of what dairy can show up as in ingredients (like this http://www.godairyfree.org/Food-to-Eat/Food-Label-Info/Dairy-Ingredient-List.html). We found that there are some words that appear in things you wouldn’t think would contain dairy. Best way to be sure is if the label says “vegan” then you know it doesn’t have any animal products. Once you get used to it, it’s not all that hard. Good luck!

One more – cheese was the hardest adjustment to make (this for a 14-year-old who needed to go dairy free along with other stuff). I found this list on that dairy free site and thought it might help with the cheese options. http://www.godairyfree.org/201006284393/News/Nutrition-Headlines/Ask-Alisa-Can-you-recommend-a-good-vegan-hard-cheese-alternative.html
